RCA Monophonic Magnetic Cutterhead
The RCA MI-4896 is a vintage Magnetic cutterhead for monophonic disk recording. This design was commonly used from the very first days of electric recording up until 1950 when they were eventually abandoned in favour of more accurate heads. Magnetic cutterheads have a distinctive, highly colored sound, which has become well-known from early blues, jazz, country and rock'n'roll recordings. The best way to recreate this vintage sound is by using the original equipment. This particular RCA head dates from 1930 and was fully rebuilt by J.I.Agnew. It uses a moving-iron type magnetic transducer.
